Wirral based, ANSELMIANS RUFC clinched the Regional 2 North West title with a home walkover win when Wilmslow conceded the last fixture of a hard-fought season.
Saints’ title win makes it two titles and back-to-back promotions in two years under head coach Derek (Degsy) Salisbury and backs coach Tommy Banks.
Sailsbury said: “It’s been a bit of a struggle a couple of times due to injury problems – Dai Morley breaking his jaw, wrist injuries to Niall Cavanagh and Jon Oates, plus all the other usual knocks and bangs you get in a normal season”.
“Luckily, we have been able to bring young players in from the second team which also helps with their rugby development going forward”.
“We have some signings to do to bring us back up to strength – but I’m really proud of all the lads for the effort and commitment they have shown this year.”
Next season, Anselmians 1st XV will play at the highest level in the club’s 75-year history, in North 1 West – just one level below the national rugby union leagues. They will be in good company with fixtures against some of the best teams in the North West region including a tantalising derby with Wirral RFC!
