Times are tough across the board for communities and businesses across Liverpool thanks to the impact of Covid 19 and the subsequent government response. It has left many organisations struggling to afford to continue.
One such example is Liverpool’s Melodic Distraction. Launched in 2017, the independent radio station has been a community hub since its creation. They are now fundraising in an effort to cover the costs of a relocation, after suddenly being forced to leave their Baltic Triangle premises at short notice.
Dr. Martens is supporting the cause in an effort to get Melodic Distraction to its £35,000 goal. They are doing this through one-off broadcasts from a new temporary set up in Jacaranda: Phase One with some of the most celebrated alumni of the station, a limited edition zine and a raffle of exclusive vinyl supplied by the likes of Craazy P, Yousef, Bontan, and Greg Wilson.
Melodic Distraction has played a significant role in Liverpool’s bubbling underground music scene. With increasing concern that gentrification could spell the end for a lot of the city’s cultural hub, establishments like this help to reinforce what Liverpool is truly about, and what it contributes to the community.
It’s hoped the new proposed site for Melodic Distraction will be in Liverpool’s Fabric District, an up-and-coming part of the city. If the radio was to reach its goal, it would allow them to set up using two shipping containers (in a similar vein to London’s Reprezent Radio) with one for the radio station and another as a community space.
