Turtle Bay is the UK’s biggest chain of Caribbean restaurants. They have venues in all the major cities and serve up spicy flavours from the West Indies. Their menu is bulging with all of the most sought-after dishes from Jamaican ‘yard food’ diners and makes every effort to give every guest a memorable tropical experience from the moment that they walk through their doors.

With their tag line – Caribbean Social – it’s clear that Turtle Bay is more than just a place to fill your stomachs; it’s a place for you to kick back and relax with friends and family. With Covid 19 around it’s obviously not the time to gather many of your pals around to eat out, but we’re taking the chance to indulge while we can.

THE VENUE AND VIBE

Turtle Bay takes it to the max with its aesthetics. Everything about the look and feel of the place is out there with its Caribbean stylings. You can see the images of many of the Caribbean’s most prominent celebrities plastered over the walls and every graphic seems to have a story to it. Everything from the tables to the toilets has a talking point within it.

To top it off, they also play Reggae music out of the speakers and create a real vibe to get you in the spirit to dig into some great food. It’s to be expected but a great touch to make it feel very complete and immerse you into the experience before your food is even served up to you. The staff were all great and made sure that we were attended to promptly and that the food got to us quickly.

THE FOOD

Starter

My friend and I shared the jerk pit wings between us and had some pit wings too. Both had an essence of jerk to them, but they weren’t nearly as spicy of ‘jerky’ as I was expecting them to be. There was nothing wrong with either of them – they were very tasty – but I was expecting more flavour to them. It was a nice way to warm things up, but I now know to alter my expectations for next time.

Main Course

Jamaican food was something I had regularly when I was younger and made weekly trips to my grandma’s house, so I’m familiar with many of the dishes.  It meant it was so hard to pick between the main courses that I actually had two. In the end I had both jerk chicken with rice and peas, and curry goat (which also comes with rice).

The half chicken was massive, juicy and literally fell off the bone when I put my fork into it. I have to say that I prefer the skin to be lot crispier than it was, but it was nice. As for the curry goat, there’s absolutely nothing I can fault from it whatsoever. There was plenty of meat, the curry had a great twang to it and I savoured every bite of it.

It really goes without saying that I overdid it and I was stuffed. I ate way too much, but I’m glad that I had the chance to try out more of the menu by doing this. If I was going to return, I would definitely be getting the curry goat. I might even want seconds.
