If you’re an artist and you live in the North of England, then you will probably want to know about the Liverpool BID Company and their search for an artist. Liverpool BID Company have joined forces with Dot-Art and are looking for another artist who wants to have their work displayed on The Liverpool Plinth. They’re searching for a North of England based sculptor who would like to have their work displayed at Liverpool Parish Church as part of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage waterfront.
Liverpool Parish Church is a stunning Grade II listed building – the Church of our Lady and Saint Nicholas. It overlooks much of the city including the Three Graces and has been a well-loved place of worship in Liverpool since the 13th century. To the side of the building on Chapel Street, you’ll see
The Liverpool Plinth, which is part of an annual project that takes place throughout Liverpool. The idea behind the yearly event is to make the most of public spaces throughout the city – displaying art by local artists with the idea of brightening public spaces. This is done by Liverpool BID Company, Dot-Art and the Parish Church, supported by the Public Art Strategy scheme.
Currently on The Liverpool Plinth is a sculpture created by an artist from Yorkshire. Gail Dooley created The Tidal Shame which has now been on display for a year. It is designed to be a ceramic gannet – a seabird common with Merseyside. However, the gannet is tangled up with plastic and rubbish from the seas, which she collected from beach shores on nearby coastlines.
A New Piece of Art For 2021
The time has come for this piece of art to be replaced and once again they are looking for local artists to apply. There are no rules except you must be based in the North of England. When you apply you do so via an open call. The application stage opened in January and you have until the 19th March 2021 to apply. If you are chosen to have your artwork displayed, not only will your piece be displayed to thousands of people visiting Liverpool every day, but you’ll win £1000 prize money.

The event itself is always an exciting one and Lucy, the director of Dot-Art recently spoke about its importance. She highlighted the fact that the event allows them to bring art to people in a really accessible way – as well as championing artists that may otherwise not be seen.
They’re looking forward to seeing different art from different artists and are ideally looking for something that raises awareness of important topics or are likely to inspire or challenge the visitors that see the art displayed at the Liverpool Plinth. If you are a local artist interested in sculpture then we’d recommend getting involved. If you’re not the creative type then you can still go along and see the winning piece when it is chosen and displayed later on in the year.
