The Walton Centre in Liverpool has been honored with a distinguished Centre of Excellence accolade by the prominent national charity, Muscular Dystrophy UK. This organization, dedicated to supporting over 110,000 individuals in the UK grappling with more than 60 muscle-wasting and weakening conditions, commended The Walton Centre for delivering exceptional care. The recognition stems from the center’s promotion of best practices on both local and national levels, showcasing their dedication to enhancing health and care for those affected by muscle-wasting conditions.
A total of 24 neuromuscular centers across the UK, including The Walton Centre, received acknowledgment. The insights gained from the awards process serve as a benchmark for evaluating neuromuscular services nationwide, offering valuable data through a national audit. This information aids centers, including The Walton Centre, in building compelling cases for additional NHS investment in essential services.

Muscular Dystrophy UK conducts its Centres of Excellence awards every three years. The audit process is supervised by the charity’s Services Development Committee, along with an independent sub-committee comprising neuromuscular health professionals and individuals with firsthand experience of neuromuscular conditions. This comprehensive audit involves the examination of information, various case studies, and instances of best practices. Additionally, it assesses the organizational structure of neuromuscular services and the accessibility of these services for individuals utilizing them.
