The foundation of any solid business is high-quality products and services. This is no different for the automotive industry. If you’re a garage owner running an efficient business with a great group of mechanics and support teams, you’re probably doing things right.
However, if your garage isn’t doing as well, you may find yourself feeling ambitious to rake in some profit. After all, the point of business, aside from offering great quality products and services, is to still generate profits, right?
What if I told you from my decades-long experience as a garage owner, that you can turn your garage into a profit-making machine?
Let’s discuss a few ideas in this article!
1. Automation Is The First Step
When I first started my garage back in 2014, I had a passion for cars and mechanics; it was pure love. However, after about six months, I was struggling to keep that fire alive because I was drowning in a sea of tasks. Tasks that were stealing the joy out of my work.
By the end of the year, I was frustrated with the amount of time I was spending on scheduling tasks and contacting clients, and my business had slowed down. For the first time, I felt like my love and passion for the job weren’t going to be enough to run a garage business successfully!
This was validated by one of my friends over a weekend drink at the bar. As a fellow garage owner, he admitted that he went through the same struggle a few years earlier and had decided to give automation a chance. As a result, his business had turned around and the profits began rolling in. I couldn’t help but think that it made perfect sense to automate routine tasks and free up time for what I loved doing best.
That weekend, I got in touch with the same company he chose for his garage management system. Working in the garage has never been the same since. It freed up my time considerably. I could manage all the client appointments, text reminders, and even notify them when the vehicle was ready, all from the same place.
I provided my in-house workers with a short training session on how to use the system, and they had a blast. Now, they enjoy their work even more, making for a well-run, happy workplace!
You may wonder if it improved my profits. The answer is an emphatic Yes! It helped streamline my business and allowed me to save time to focus on what I loved doing. It meant I could take on more work without having to worry about mundane tasks! More work = more business = More Profits! I’d say you should consider giving the garage management system a try, it’s worth it.
2. Multiple Business Opportunities
Successful businesses always look for opportunities to gain profits and diversify. If you look hard enough, you’ll always find that opportunity to not just grow but combine multiple business options into one. You might be thrilled to know that there are a wide variety of business opportunities you could combine with a garage business.
I was pondering about business ideas I could combine into my existing garage when I stumbled upon a pamphlet for cordless dog clippers. That moment was the birth of my first combined business idea among some other things.
I had many customers who were also dog owners. Some of them would drive into the garage with their dogs in tow. Since my garage space was relatively big, the dogs had ample space to run around.
I thought if I could convert some of the extra space to set up a small corner and offer dog grooming services while the clients got their vehicles repaired, this could be a business within a business.
Before I set up shop within my garage for this, I decided to talk to some of my clients and find out if they would consider this to be a good idea. I think it’s important to know your market and get a feel for its pulse. Thankfully, my clients were ecstatic about it. I didn’t waste much time setting up a small corner within the garage for this purpose. I can tell you that the whole atmosphere of the garage changed into a more fun and playful one.
Since there was an increase in customers, I decided to make things more comfortable for them. I installed two vending machines (another great money-making idea!), one for instant coffee and another one for cold drinks. Two cosy couches and a coffee table added the finishing touches to an inviting waiting area for my clients.
Depending on what you can afford to do with your garage space, your investment into a ‘second business within a business’ idea is highly subjective. If you don’t want to deal with dogs, you could consider other ideas.
You could easily start an online shop to sell car accessories or car kits. Your garage could be the hub from where they collect and distribute your orders. You could even consider hosting masterclasses every month on basic vehicle repairs or introductory classes for high-school students interested in pursuing automotive mechanics as a career. I could go on, but you get the gist.
3. Marketing It The Right Way
No matter what product or service you decide to use as your next business idea, marketing wins half your battle. The other half is the quality of the product/service you’re offering. Now, I’m not a marketing guy. Just someone who runs a garage.
I don’t know any fancy marketing lingo but could get by on word-of-mouth, an often underestimated marketing tactic. However, while word-of-mouth worked great for me, if we wanted to grow, paid marketing was the way. I like my marketing strategy to revolve around visual materials – but nothing too complicated.
When I set out to start my garage, the first thing I did was to create a simple yet attractive logo that people could identify my business with. Then, I decided to install some flags with my garage logo in key places along the road to my workshop, so people could find their way easily. You could find flags on sale like I did or create custom ones! It was easy, hassle-free marketing and a useful one at that.
Conclusion
I think running a garage business can be quite fun, and there’s enough opportunity to add complementary businesses to it, no matter how far-fetched it may sound at first. When I mentioned to my friends that my garage business also has a dog grooming service, they laughed at first. That was until they heard how much I make with these two businesses combined. It’s just a matter of picking the right business and being familiar with its market.
