Kiera McDonald, an undergraduate at the University of Liverpool, has been honored with the Creative Sector Award on July 18, 2024. This award recognizes her ability to overcome adversity while achieving outstanding accomplishments in the creative sector alongside her studies. Kiera, currently pursuing a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, has demonstrated a remarkable passion for creativity.

During her time in sixth form, Kiera launched her own freelance graphic design business. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to design menus and signage for the Birmingham BBC Good Food Show, as well as create flyers for events with over 400 attendees. These experiences paved the way for her to secure a one-year Creative Operations Graduate Internship at NVIDIA.

The issue of social mobility remains a significant challenge in the UK. The recent appointments of a working-class Prime Minister and an Education Minister who received free school meals have provided new role models and hope for future generations. According to findings from the Social Mobility Commission, individuals from professional family backgrounds are still six times more likely to enter professional jobs compared to those from working-class backgrounds. This disparity underscores the importance of role models like Kiera.

The upReach Student Social Mobility Awards celebrate the exceptional work of individuals and organizations promoting social mobility across the UK. Held at London’s Manor House, these awards honor undergraduates for their academic excellence, dedication to social mobility, outstanding career achievements, and remarkable accomplishments. Kiera McDonald’s recognition is a testament to her hard work and dedication to both her studies and her creative pursuits.
